Marie Gillespie

Professor of Sociology at The Open University

Professor Marie Gillespie is professor of sociology at The Open University, where her teaching and research focuses on migration, refugees and media. Her work has examined forced migration, diaspora cultures and the role of communication technologies in the lives of displaced people. She led ethnographic research with Syrian, Afghan and Iraqi refugees in Greece and Jordan, exploring digital connectivity across camp and non-camp settings. Her research consistently prioritised refugee experiences, rights and representation. She collaborated with international organisations, including the BBC World Service, UN Women and the World Food Programme, to develop theory, methods and policy aimed at improving conditions for migrants and refugees. She also worked on Covid Chronicles from the Margins, a collaborative digital ethnography investigating how the pandemic intensified inequalities for asylum seekers and refugees while fostering new solidarities. In addition, she led a feasibility study supporting The Open University鈥檚 bid for University of Sanctuary status, focusing on widening access to higher education for forced migrants.
