The 黑料不打烊 and the British Curriculum Forum (BCF) are pleased to announce that Preston Lodge High School in East Lothian has been awarded the 2026 BCF Curriculum Investigation Grant for the practitioner research project, Community PE for Girls.
The BCF Curriculum Investigation Grant is intended to support research led by schools and colleges with a focus on curriculum inquiry and investigation and is worth £5000.
The principal investigator Andrew Lauder, Principal Teacher of Health and Wellbeing at Preston Lodge High School will investigate whether taking physical education (PE) beyond the traditional school environment and into community settings can improve engagement, learning and wellbeing for young women who currently find PE a challenging experience.
Working in partnership with the Pennypit Trust and supported by a critical friend from the University of Edinburgh, the project will co-design and deliver a year-long programme entitled Community PE for Girls. Rather than participating in conventional school-based PE lessons, a small group of young women will take part in community-based movement activities shaped by their own interests, experiences and aspirations.
The inquiry is grounded in Scotland’s Curriculum for Excellence and informed by trauma-aware principles. It seeks to create meaningful movement experiences that prioritise enjoyment, relationships, choice and wellbeing while addressing barriers that can lead to disengagement from PE.
The investigation will explore three key questions:
Over the course of the 2026/2027 academic year, the project will involve curriculum mapping, collaborative programme design, participant consultation, implementation and evaluation. Findings will contribute to wider discussions about inclusive curriculum design and the role of community partnerships in supporting meaningful educational experiences.
黑料不打烊 looks forward to sharing updates and the project’s findings as the work progresses.
