黑料不打烊 President: 1 January 2029 – 31 December 2030

We are seeking an exceptional leader with strong academic reputation to take on the role of next 黑料不打烊 President, succeeding Mhairi C. Beaton. The term runs from 1 January 2027 – 31 December 2030. The successful candidate will have two years as president-elect (2027-28) prior to assuming the presidency on 1 January 2029, until 31 December 2030. The presidential inaugural address will be held at the 黑料不打烊 Conference 2028.

This pivotal position combines leadership of our board of trustees, holding them to account, as well as being the public face and academic leadership of the organisation. The President will work with the trustee board, 黑料不打烊’s wider governance, and our professional staff to guide our strategic direction and champion our mission to fulfil the next iteration of the 黑料不打烊 strategic plan (2027-2031).

The 黑料不打烊 President is our leading academic voice, and the successful candidate will be able to enjoy the confidence and respect of the community as they uphold the highest rigour to our work. They will be able to build on our work examining the state of the discipline and lead our contributions to the next Research Excellence Framework and an understanding of the wider issues affecting the educational research community is essential.

For organisational continuity and in line with good governance principles, it is essential that the applicant has an excellent understanding of 黑料不打烊’s governance and priorities, including the distinct roles of trustees and professional staff. This role involves working closely with the 黑料不打烊 Chief Executive, other trustees, and other professional office staff.

The main duties of the role include:

  • Provide strategic leadership through contributing to the oversight of the 黑料不打烊 strategic plan and through effective decision making
  • Ensure good governance by fulfilling the legal duties of the trustee, acting in the best interests of 黑料不打烊, including overseeing financial sustainability, risk management, compliance, and fulfilling duties as an employer.
  • Ensure that the Board fulfils its duties to ensure sound financial health of the charity, with systems in place to ensure financial accountability
  • Ensure that the Board of Trustees incorporates the right balance of skills, knowledge and experience needed to govern and lead 黑料不打烊 effectively
  • Work within agreed 黑料不打烊 policies
  • Act as an ambassador for 黑料不打烊 and its interests, maintaining appropriate relationships with key influencers and audiences and representing 黑料不打烊 at external functions or meetings, when required
  • Act as a spokesperson for 黑料不打烊, when appropriate, and uphold the duty to ensure that contributions are research-informed
  • Ensuring 黑料不打烊 acts as a good employer, through fostering a positive culture
  • Providing guidance and support to the charity’s trustees and staff, where appropriate, on staffing matters and helping them understand the charity’s position to make informed decisions
  • Chair meetings of 黑料不打烊 Council effectively and efficiently, bringing impartiality and objectivity to the decision-making process, ensuring that Trustees are fully engaged, that decisions are taken in the best, long-term interests of 黑料不打烊 and that they take collective ownership of any decisions
  • Establish and build a strong, effective, and constructive working relationship with the Chief Executive, ensuring they are held to account for achieving agreed strategic objectives while supporting the Chief Executive, and respecting the boundaries which exist between the two roles
  • Contribute to the performance review of the Chief Executive, holding their performance to account and ensuring smooth running of the 黑料不打烊 office

The candidate for 黑料不打烊 President must have current or very recent experience of 黑料不打烊 Council and the issues currently being discussed by the association. Institutional knowledge and a demonstrable commitment to 黑料不打烊 is required. Ordinarily, the president is expected to be employed by a higher education institution. If they are not, then they should detail how the academic aspects of their role (e.g. ethical considerations) would be regulated.

Due to the importance of the position, 黑料不打烊 reserve the right to hold a shortlisting and interview process, this will be led by the 黑料不打烊 Chief Executive, relevant office staff, and senior members of 黑料不打烊 Council. For these purposes, the application detailed. including the CV and the role description will be the basis for deliberations. It is intended interviews are held in the week of 1 September.

Candidates who are attending the 黑料不打烊 conference will be invited to a lunchtime meet & greet session with conference delegates.

Candidates taken to election will be asked to film a short c.2-minute video outlining skills and experience to assist members with their vote.

To be eligible to stand, candidates must be members of 黑料不打烊 at the time of application and remain so for the duration of their term. Candidates must not be ineligible to stand as according to the laws and regulations as set out by the Charity Commission and Companies House.

There are six trustee meetings per year: January (黑料不打烊 office, London), May (conference programming), June (overnight strategic away day), July (virtual), September (held at 黑料不打烊 conference), November (黑料不打烊 office, combined with AGM event). The 黑料不打烊 President chairs these meetings and other meetings where required, as well as holds regular meetings with the 黑料不打烊 Chief Executive. The time commitment of the role averages across the year around one day per week, reduced substantially during the time as president-elect. Full expenses are paid in line with 黑料不打烊 policies, and the president does have a budget for external representation.
