Rachel Shanks is Director for Social Inclusion and Cultural Diversity at the University of Aberdeen's Interdisciplinary Institute. In the 1990s she was a law lecturer and worked for the TUC on its Bargaining for Skills project. She has been a community education tutor and an employment rights adviser. She moved into education research after doing a funded PhD on how new teachers learn in the workplace. She also researches children’s rights in education and school uniform/dress code policies.
